Range

Habitat

Black spruce, jack pine, tamarack bog margins and dense, low conifer regeneration.

Best timing

Late September through early October offers accessible roads, mild weather and birds feeding near cover edges.

Identification

Males are dark slate with white spotting, a black throat and red eye comb. Females are heavily barred; verify carefully where ranges overlap.
